# Welcome to Arbiter
> Your AI legal assistant for document analysis, drafting, and research
## What is Arbiter?
Arbiter is an AI legal assistant that helps you work with contracts and legal documents. Think of it as a knowledgeable colleague who can review contracts, draft documents, research legal questions, and analyze entire deal rooms - available whenever you need it.
**What you can do with Arbiter:**
* Upload a contract and get a comprehensive risk analysis in minutes
* Draft any document from scratch by describing what you need
* Ask questions about your documents in plain language
* Research case law, statutes, and legal commentary across jurisdictions
* Analyze multiple documents together for transactions or litigation
**Works globally.** Arbiter operates in any language and jurisdiction. Draft a German Arbeitsvertrag, analyze a Brazilian service agreement, research French case law, or compare UK and US contract terms - Arbiter handles local legal terminology and conventions natively.

## How Lawyers Use Arbiter
Upload a contract and get scoring for clarity, enforceability, and risk. See issues flagged at the clause level with suggested fixes.
Describe what you need in plain language. Arbiter creates an outline, researches relevant sources, and drafts each section.
Ask complex legal questions. Get analysis with citations from case law, statutes, and academic sources.
Group documents into a matter and run AI workflows: extract timelines, find contradictions, build closing checklists.

## Getting Started
Choose how you want to start:
Click "Upload Document" in the sidebar. Arbiter accepts PDF and DOCX files. For scanned documents, enable OCR.
Click on your document to open it. You'll see the document on the left and a chat sidebar on the right.
Click "Analyze Document" to start. Arbiter reviews the entire contract and scores each section.
Check the Section Analysis tab for scores. Click any section to see detailed findings, risks, and suggested revisions.
Use the chat to ask questions: "What are the biggest risks for us?" or "How does this indemnification compare to market standard?"
**Example questions to ask after analysis:**
* "Summarize the key obligations for each party"
* "Which clauses should we push back on in negotiation?"
* "Research recent cases on this type of limitation of liability clause"
Click "Draft New Contract" on the dashboard, or create a new document from the sidebar.
Type your request: "Draft a consulting agreement for a software implementation project governed by California law"
Arbiter asks clarifying questions in a form. Fill in parties, key terms, jurisdiction, and any special requirements.
Arbiter proposes a section outline. Review it, request changes if needed, then approve to start drafting.
Arbiter researches and drafts each section. You can review as it goes, or turn on AutoDraft to generate everything at once.
**Example requests:**
* "Draft a mutual NDA for a potential M\&A discussion"
* "Create an employment agreement with non-compete for a senior executive in Texas"
* "Write a memo analyzing whether our client's arbitration clause is enforceable"
* "Draft a distribution agreement under German law, in German"
Click "Legal Research" on the dashboard to start a new research chat.
Type your question with context: jurisdiction, parties, specific issues you're trying to resolve.
Click the globe icon to enable GitLaw. Arbiter will search for current case law, statutes, and commentary.
Read Arbiter's response. For complex questions, try Deliberation mode where three AI agents analyze from different angles.
Ask clarifying questions, request more research on specific points, or ask Arbiter to draft something based on the research.
**Example questions:**
* "Is a non-compete enforceable against an independent contractor in California?"
* "What are the key differences between English and New York law on limitation of liability?"
* "Research recent Delaware cases on director fiduciary duties in conflict transactions"
* "What are the GDPR requirements for transferring employee data outside the EU?"
Click "Create Matter" to start the wizard. A matter is a folder that groups related documents.
Upload or select documents. You can add up to 100 documents per matter.
Arbiter automatically extracts the matter name, type, parties, and jurisdiction from your documents.
Choose from 24 AI workflows: Master Timeline, Contradiction Finder, Key Terms Comparison, Closing Checklist, and more.
Use the Research tab to ask questions. Arbiter has context of all documents in the matter.

* Extract a timeline of all dates and deadlines across the transaction
* Find contradictions between the SPA and disclosure schedules
* Compare key terms across multiple vendor contracts
* Generate a closing checklist with outstanding items

## What Makes Arbiter Different
### Works in Any Language and Jurisdiction
Arbiter uses GitLaw and Meshline to research and draft across 190+ legal systems. It searches in native legal languages for better results:
* **German**: Searches "BGB § 823 Schadensersatz" not just "German tort law"
* **French**: Searches "Code civil article 1240 responsabilité"
* **Spanish**: Searches "Código Civil artículo 1902"
Ask Arbiter to draft in any language, and it follows local legal conventions.
### Scores That Mean Something
When Arbiter analyzes a contract, it gives you three scores (0-100) for each section:

| ------------------ | ----------------------------------------------- |
| **Clarity** | How clearly obligations and terms are expressed |
| **Enforceability** | Whether provisions would hold up in court |
| **Risk** | Level of exposure for each party |
These aren't arbitrary numbers. Arbiter identifies specific issues (undefined terms, one-sided clauses, jurisdictional concerns) and calculates scores based on what it finds.

When Arbiter cites a case or statute, it's not making it up. GitLaw searches actual legal databases and returns verified sources. You'll see:
